How NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Scoring Works: A Beginner’s Guide

NCAA women’s gymnastics can be confusing at first. One gymnast performs a difficult routine and scores a 9.850, while another appears to do something simpler and receives a 9.950. Then a team finishes with a score such as 197.825 or 198.1625.

The key is that NCAA women’s gymnastics uses a 10.0 scoring system. Judges first determine the routine’s Start Value, then subtract deductions for mistakes in execution, composition and landing.

For uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, gymnasts can build their Start Value up to 10.0 by meeting difficulty and connection requirements. Vault works differently because every vault has a predetermined Start Value.

NCAA women’s gymnastics is based primarily on USA Gymnastics Development Program Level 10 rules, with NCAA-specific modifications.

Rules note: The most recent complete NCAA rules currently published are the 2025–26 Women’s Gymnastics Rules Modifications. The NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Committee has continued preparing for the 2026–27 season, but a new complete Rules Modifications document is not yet listed on the NCAA playing-rules page.

The basic scoring formula is:

Start Value − Deductions = Judge’s Score

If a gymnast has a 10.0 Start Value and judges find 0.15 in deductions, that judge would award a 9.850.

Does NCAA Gymnastics Use the 10.0 System?

Yes. Unlike elite gymnastics under the FIG Code of Points, NCAA women’s gymnastics still uses a 10.0-based system.

A routine that meets the necessary requirements and earns enough bonus can have a 10.0 Start Value. Judges then subtract deductions for mistakes such as landing steps, bent knees, flexed feet, balance checks and falls.

That is why scores such as 9.900, 9.950 and 10.000 are so common in NCAA gymnastics.

How Is an NCAA Gymnastics Score Calculated?

For uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, the process can be simplified into four parts:

  1. Establish the basic Start Value.
  2. Meet all Special Requirements.
  3. Earn enough difficulty and Connection Value bonus.
  4. Subtract execution and other deductions.

Vault is different because its Start Value is already assigned according to the vault performed.

What Is the NCAA Start Value?

The Start Value, usually abbreviated SV, is the highest score a gymnast can receive before execution deductions.

Under the latest NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Rules Modifications currently published, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise have a:

9.40 Base Start Value

Gymnasts can then earn up to 0.60 in bonus, bringing the routine to:

9.40 + 0.60 = 10.00

The NCAA requires at least:

  • +0.10 D/E difficulty bonus
  • +0.10 Connection Value
  • The remaining +0.40 may come from either source

However, earning enough bonus is only part of the equation. The gymnast must also complete the event’s Special Requirements.

What Are NCAA Special Requirements?

Special Requirements, often shortened to SR, are specific types of skills or combinations that must appear in an NCAA routine.

They apply to:

  • Uneven bars
  • Balance beam
  • Floor exercise

Vault does not use the same system because each vault has its own assigned Start Value.

Under the current published NCAA rules, each missing Special Requirement reduces the Start Value by 0.20.

For example, if a gymnast otherwise has a 10.0 routine but misses one requirement:

10.00 − 0.20 = 9.80 Start Value

Special Requirements and bonus are closely related, but they are not the same thing.

Special Requirements make sure the routine contains the required types of gymnastics. Bonus rewards difficulty and connections that help increase the Start Value.

How Does NCAA Bonus Work?

Gymnasts use bonus to raise their Start Value from 9.40 toward 10.00.

There are two main types.

Difficulty or D/E Bonus

Difficulty bonus rewards harder skills.

Gymnastics elements are assigned letter values that generally increase in difficulty:

A → B → C → D → E

More difficult D- and E-rated skills can contribute bonus toward the Start Value.

The important point is that harder skills do not automatically produce a higher final score. Once a gymnast reaches a 10.0 Start Value, clean execution becomes especially important.

Connection Value

Connection Value, abbreviated CV, rewards gymnasts for directly connecting eligible skills.

Instead of:

Skill → pause → Skill

the gymnast performs:

Skill + Skill

without a break.

Eligible combinations can add bonus to the Start Value.

To reach the full 10.0 Start Value, a routine needs 0.60 total bonus, including at least +0.10 from D/E difficulty and +0.10 from Connection Value.

This is why NCAA gymnasts do not always perform the hardest routines possible. Coaches often build routines that can reach 10.0 consistently while minimizing unnecessary risk.

What Is UTL in NCAA Gymnastics?

UTL means Up to the Competitive Level.

It checks whether a routine contains enough high-level difficulty for NCAA competition.

UTL is separate from Special Requirements and bonus. Under the latest published rules, failing the event-specific UTL standard results in a flat:

0.10 deduction

The easiest way to remember the three concepts is:

Special Requirements = required types of skills

Bonus = difficulty and connections used to reach 10.0

UTL = enough overall difficulty for NCAA competition

Execution Deductions: Where Most Scores Are Lost

Once the Start Value has been established, judges evaluate how well the routine is performed.

This is where most of the differences between a 10.0, 9.950 and 9.800 appear.

Judges can deduct for errors including:

  • Bent knees
  • Leg separation
  • Flexed feet
  • Poor body position
  • Lack of height or amplitude
  • Incomplete twists
  • Incomplete turns
  • Handstands short of vertical
  • Balance checks
  • Extra swings
  • Landing steps or hops
  • Poor landing body position
  • Falls

Small errors may cost only a few hundredths or tenths, but several small deductions quickly add up.

Example

Suppose a gymnast has a 10.0 Start Value.

How Much Is a Fall in NCAA Gymnastics?

A fall is a major error and costs 0.50.

For example:

10.0 Start Value − 0.50 fall − 0.10 other errors = 9.40

A fall does not automatically ruin a team’s meet because of NCAA’s team-scoring format. Since six gymnasts can compete and only five scores count, the fallen routine can sometimes become the dropped score.

How Is NCAA Vault Scored?

Vault is the major exception to the normal 9.4-plus-bonus system.

Every vault on the NCAA Vault Value Chart has its own predetermined Start Value based on difficulty.

The gymnast performs one vault for her score. Current NCAA vault values range from below 10.0 to a maximum of 10.0.

The last two are commonly known as a Yurchenko full and Yurchenko 1½.

How Is Uneven Bars Scored?

Uneven bars routines must meet the event’s Special Requirements and earn enough bonus to reach a 10.0 Start Value.

Judges then look for execution mistakes such as short handstands, bent arms or knees, leg separation, flexed feet, extra swings and landing errors.

How Is Balance Beam Scored?

Balance beam combines acrobatics, dance, connections, body control and a dismount.

How Is Floor Exercise Scored?

Floor exercise combines tumbling, dance, leaps, turns and choreography.

How Does NCAA Team Scoring Work?

This is one of the simplest parts of NCAA gymnastics scoring.

Each team can compete six gymnasts on each event.

Only the five highest scores count.

This is commonly described as:

6 up, 5 count

The 9.400 disappears from the event total.

That dropped-score system gives teams some protection against one major mistake. However, if two gymnasts fall, one of those scores will usually have to count.

What Is the Maximum NCAA Team Score?

Five scores count on each of four events.

If all five counting gymnasts earn perfect 10s:

5 × 10.0 = 50.000 per event

Across all four events:

50 + 50 + 50 + 50 = 200.000

So the maximum possible NCAA women’s gymnastics team score is:

200.000

A score around 197 or 198 therefore means the team averaged very close to 9.9 across its 20 counting routines.

For example, a 198.000 team score equals an average counting score of:

198 ÷ 20 = 9.900

That is why breaking 198 is considered an exceptionally strong team performance.

NCAA Scoring vs Elite Gymnastics Scoring

One reason college gymnastics can be confusing is that many NCAA athletes have also competed in elite gymnastics.

The scoring systems are very different. Unlike NCAA’s 10.0 system, elite gymnastics scoring uses an open-ended system with separate Difficulty (D) and Execution (E) scores.

In FIG competition:

D-score + E-score − penalties = Final Score

In NCAA competition, the beginner-friendly version is:

Start Value − deductions = Final Score

This difference allows elite gymnasts to simplify some routines when they enter college.

Rather than maximizing difficulty at all costs, NCAA gymnasts often aim for the cleanest routine that can still start from 10.0.
