How Do Gymnastics Judges Decide Whether a Skill Gets Credit?

A gymnast may plan a difficult skill, but judges do not award difficulty based on what the gymnast meant to perform.

They award credit for what they actually see.

If the skill is completed closely enough to the definition in the FIG Code of Points, it receives its difficulty value. If an important part is missing, judges may count it as an easier skill instead—or give it no difficulty credit at all.

That decision affects the gymnast’s D-Score, which is the difficulty part of the final score.

This article explains how skill credit works in current FIG women’s and men’s artistic gymnastics.

What Does It Mean for a Skill to Get Credit?

Every recognized FIG skill has a difficulty value.

Most non-vault skills use letter ratings:

But simply attempting a D-rated skill does not automatically give the gymnast 0.40. The skill has to look enough like the officially recognized element for judges to count it.

That can lead to three basic outcomes:

Skill Credit and Execution Are Not the Same Thing

This is the most important idea to understand.

FIG judges separate:

What skill was performed?

from:

How well was it performed?

The first question affects the D-Score.

The second affects the E-Score.

For example, a gymnast might perform a D-rated skill worth 0.40 and clearly complete the skill well enough for judges to recognize it.

But she might also:

  • bend her knees,
  • separate her legs,
  • flex her feet,
  • or take a large step on landing.

She can still receive the 0.40 difficulty value while losing execution points.

So:

Full skill credit does not mean perfect execution.

The opposite can also happen. A gymnast may perform something fairly cleanly, but if an important part of the skill is missing, judges may count it as an easier skill.

What Do Judges Look At?

There is no single test that applies to every gymnastics skill.

The exact rules depend on the event and element, but judges often look at things such as:

A small error may only lower the E-Score.

A bigger technical error can change what skill the judges recognize.

Examples From Women’s Gymnastics

Women’s gymnastics gives several clear examples of how this works.

A Turn Can Be Credited as an Easier Turn

Imagine a gymnast attempts a turn with a certain amount of rotation.

If she finishes too far short, judges may not give her the intended turn.

Instead, they may recognize the easier turn that she actually completed.

Under the current WAG Code, certain dance turns that are more than 30° short of the intended rotation are recognized as another element when one applies.

So the gymnast may still get difficulty credit—but not as much as she planned.

A Split Can Still Get Credit Even If It Is Not Perfect

Split leaps are a good example of the difference between recognition and execution.

Suppose a skill is supposed to show a 180° split.

If the gymnast is only slightly short, judges may still recognize the intended skill and take an execution deduction.

As the split becomes much more incomplete, the problem can become serious enough that the intended element is no longer recognized.

Under the current WAG rules:

So a gymnast does not automatically lose the skill because the split is imperfect.

There is a point where the error changes from:

“The skill counts, but it was not performed well.”

to:

“That is no longer the skill she was trying to perform.”

Body Shape Can Change the Skill

Some gymnastics elements look very similar but have different values because of body position.

A jump may need a certain ring shape.

A turn may require the free leg to stay at a certain height.

A salto may need to be clearly tucked, piked or stretched.

If the gymnast does not show the body position that defines the harder skill, judges may recognize a different skill instead.

This is why small-looking technical details can make a noticeable difference to the D-Score.

Uneven Bars Uses Specific Angle Rules

On Bars, the finishing angle of a skill can determine whether it receives difficulty credit.

A clear example is the cast to handstand.

Under the current WAG Code, the cast has to finish close enough to vertical to receive the intended Difficulty Value. If it finishes too far below handstand, that difficulty credit can be lost.

The important point for a beginner is:

“Almost to handstand” does not always count the same as reaching the required position.

Different Bars skills have different angle rules, so judges use the exact Code rather than one universal cutoff for every element.

Examples From Men’s Gymnastics

Men’s gymnastics follows the same basic principle:

Judges credit the skill that was actually completed, not just the skill that was attempted.

But the six men’s events have many different recognition rules.

A Large Angle Error Can Cost the Skill

On some men’s swinging elements, finishing a little away from the correct position leads to an execution deduction.

If the error becomes too large, judges may stop recognizing the intended element altogether.

Under current MAG rules, some swinging elements performed more than 45° away from the required position can lose their Difficulty Value.

This shows the same pattern:

small error → skill still counts

large error → skill may no longer count

Too Much Under-Rotation Can Change a Twisting Skill

Twisting skills can also be recognized differently if the gymnast does not complete enough rotation.

A small under-rotation may receive an execution deduction.

A much larger difference can cause the judges to recognize a lower-value skill, or give no value when the element no longer matches a recognized skill.

So judges are not asking only:

“Did the gymnast try a triple twist?”

They are asking:

“How much twist was actually completed, and which skill in the Code does that match?”

Strength Holds Have to Be Held

This is especially important on Still Rings.

Many Rings strength elements have to be shown as a clear static position, often for two seconds.

Passing quickly through something that looks like an iron cross is not the same as actually holding an iron cross.

If the required position or hold is not shown, the skill can lose difficulty credit.

That makes Rings a good example of why time and body position can be part of the skill definition itself.

Losing Credit Can Affect More Than One Part of the D-Score

A skill is not always valuable only because of its letter rating.

It may also be used to:

  • meet a women’s Composition Requirement,
  • satisfy a men’s Element Group,
  • earn Connection Value,
  • qualify for a bonus,
  • or become one of the routine’s counting elements.

So if a skill loses credit, the gymnast may lose more than the value of that one element.

For example, suppose the planned skill is a D worth:

0.40

but judges recognize it as a C worth:

0.30

The immediate loss is:

0.10

But if that D skill was also supposed to complete a requirement or connection, the total D-Score loss could be larger.

Can Both Skills Count but the Connection Not Count?

Yes.

This happens often enough that it is worth separating from skill recognition.

Imagine:

Skill A → Skill B

Both skills may receive their individual difficulty values.

But if the gymnast pauses, takes an extra step, loses balance or otherwise breaks the connection, judges may give:

Skill A → credited

Skill B → credited

Connection bonus → not credited

So losing Connection Value does not necessarily mean either individual skill was lost.

This is one reason two routines containing the same skills can still have different D-Scores.

Does a Fall Mean the Skill Gets No Credit?

Not automatically.

A fall affects execution, but judges still have to decide whether the skill itself was completed well enough to be recognized.

A gymnast may complete a salto and then fall on landing. Depending on the element and how it was completed, the gymnast may still receive the Difficulty Value and also receive the fall deduction.

In other situations, the way the skill ends is part of its recognition requirement. If the gymnast fails to complete the element in the required way, difficulty credit can also be lost.

So the safest rule is:

A fall does not automatically erase the skill.

Judges first decide what element was completed, then apply the relevant execution deductions.

Who Decides Whether the Skill Counts?

At FIG competitions, this is mainly the job of the D-Jury.

The D-Jury decides things such as:

  • which skills receive credit,
  • which Difficulty Values count,
  • whether requirements were met,
  • whether connections receive credit,
  • and what the final D-Score should be.

The E-Jury has a different job.

It judges the quality of the performance and takes deductions for errors.

So:

D-Jury → What did the gymnast successfully perform?

E-Jury → How well did the gymnast perform it?

That distinction explains many scoring situations that can otherwise seem confusing.

Why Can a Planned D-Score Be Different From the Final D-Score?

Gymnasts and coaches often know the planned D-Score before the routine begins.

But that number assumes every important skill and connection receives credit.

Suppose a gymnast plans a routine worth:

6.5

During the routine:

  • one turn is under-rotated,
  • one skill is credited at a lower value,
  • and one connection is broken.

The final D-Score might become:

6.1

Nothing was manually “deducted” from the D-Score in the same way an execution deduction is taken.

Instead, some of the planned difficulty was simply not awarded.

That is an important difference.

Can a Coach Challenge the D-Score?

Yes.

FIG allows an official inquiry into the Difficulty Score.

If a coach believes the judges did not correctly recognize a skill, connection or requirement, the appropriate representative can request a review under the FIG inquiry procedure.

The normal inquiry process is about the D-Score, not the E-Score.

So a coach may question:

  • whether a skill received the correct value,
  • whether a connection should have counted,
  • or whether a requirement was correctly credited.

But the coach cannot normally use a D-Score inquiry simply because they disagree with ordinary execution deductions.

Why Skill Credit Matters So Much

The D-Score is not based on a gymnast’s planned routine.

It is based on the difficulty the judges actually recognize.

Two gymnasts might both plan a 6.5 routine.

Gymnast A receives all of the planned credit:

Planned D: 6.5 → Final D: 6.5

Gymnast B loses a skill and a connection:

Planned D: 6.5 → Final D: 6.2

Before execution is even considered, Gymnast A already has a 0.30 advantage.

That is why top gymnasts do not only ask:

“How hard is this skill?”

They also have to ask:

“Can I perform it clearly enough to receive credit consistently?”

Sometimes a slightly easier but reliable skill is more valuable than a harder skill that is frequently downgraded.

Can gymnastics judges downgrade a skill?

Yes. If the attempted skill does not meet the requirements for its intended value but matches another recognized element, judges may credit the easier skill instead.

Can a skill count and still receive deductions?
