A gymnast may be able to perform a difficult skill in training and still leave it out of a competition routine. Another gymnast may replace a spectacular combination with something simpler, and score higher.

Those choices are part of routine construction: selecting and arranging skills to earn difficulty or Start Value while limiting deductions. A strong routine also meets the event’s requirements, suits the gymnast’s strengths and holds together from beginning to end.
The goal is a routine the gymnast can perform well enough to turn its scoring potential into a result. The examples below focus on senior FIG artistic gymnastics and NCAA women’s gymnastics, using the 2025–2028 FIG Codes and 2026–27 NCAA rules.
Start With the Scoring System
Before comparing skills, the gymnast and coach need to know what the competition rewards. The same change can have a different scoring effect in elite and college gymnastics.
FIG: Difficulty and Execution Both Affect the Result
FIG separates the points earned for skills and routine content, called the D-Score, from the quality of performance, called the E-Score. Execution begins from 10.0, with deductions for mistakes.
A harder routine can earn more difficulty, but those extra points must outweigh any additional execution losses. Connections, requirements and applicable bonuses also matter, so the value of an upgrade cannot always be judged from one skill’s letter rating.

NCAA Women: First Build the Available Start Value
NCAA women’s routines use a Start Value: the score available before performance deductions. Once a routine has a 10.0 Start Value, extra difficulty cannot raise that starting maximum.
For 2026–27, Bars, Beam and Floor reach 10.0 through required content, bonus and Composition Credit, which rewards specified aspects of routine construction. Vault instead has an assigned Start Value. NCAA Women’s Rules Modifications, Section 1.5 and Appendix I.
Consequently, an NCAA upgrade needs a clear purpose. It might raise a routine that starts below 10.0, provide another route to required bonus, or replace a skill the gymnast performs less cleanly. Simply making an already complete routine harder does not automatically improve its scoring potential.

Choose Skills That Cover the Requirements
A collection of difficult skills is not necessarily a complete routine. The rules also specify types of movement and limits on which skills count.
Women’s FIG routines on Bars, Beam and Floor use Composition Requirements. Men’s FIG routines use Element Groups on the five non-vault events. These systems encourage variety, but their rules differ.
Let a Skill Serve More Than One Purpose
An efficient selection can contribute individual difficulty while also fulfilling required content.
For example, a recognized full-twisting double back on women’s Floor can fulfill both the twisting-salto and double-salto Composition Requirements when performed in a counting acrobatic line.
A salto is a flip without hand support. The gymnast still needs the other required content, including a forward salto for directional variety. FIG WAG Code, Sections 7.3 and 13.3.
This does not make that particular skill the right choice for every gymnast. It shows why coaches consider a skill’s role in the whole routine, as well as its individual value.
Improve the Part That Creates the Biggest Gain
Some upgrades improve requirement credit as well as skill difficulty.
Consider a hypothetical upgrade within a regular MAG Element Group II or III. Assume the gymnast’s best qualifying element in that group is a C, and a D replaces it among the counting elements:

The upgrade adds 0.30, even though the skill’s own value increases by only 0.10. This example assumes no other element already earns full credit for that group. Element Group I and dismount credit follow different rules. FIG MAG Code, Article 7.2.
From a scoring perspective, improving an underfilled requirement can therefore be more productive than adding difficulty to an already strong part of the routine.
Check What Actually Counts
Senior FIG routines generally count eight Difficulty Values on non-vault events, subject to apparatus-specific selection rules. Performing another hard skill does not guarantee that its value will be added to the total.
For example, women’s Beam and Floor counting sets must include at least three dance and three acrobatic elements. An exceptional tumbler still needs suitable dance content.
Men also have counting restrictions, including limits within Element Groups. FIG WAG Code, Sections 12.2 and 13.2, FIG MAG Code, Article 6.1.
Before adding an element, the useful questions are whether it replaces something in the counting set, fulfills a requirement or contributes another permitted form of credit.
Compare the Difficulty Gain With the Likely Deductions
A planned upgrade is valuable only when the gymnast receives enough of its benefit in performance.
This hypothetical comparison includes no separate bonuses or penalties:

The harder routine earns 0.20 more difficulty but loses 0.40 more in execution. Its final score is therefore 0.20 lower.
This calculation does not imply that gymnasts should always choose easier skills. If the upgraded routine’s execution improves to 8.40, its total becomes 14.40, making the upgrade worthwhile in this example.
A Successful Attempt Is Only Part of the Evidence
Completing a skill once shows that it is possible. A competition decision also depends on whether the gymnast can repeatedly perform it with the required shape, rotation and finish.
An attempted higher-value skill may be credited as something easier if it does not meet its technical definition. The gymnast could then receive little or no difficulty advantage while still losing execution points.
Routine evaluation should therefore consider both recognition and quality. A reliable skill that judges consistently credit may contribute more than an ambitious skill whose value changes from one performance to another.
Small Errors Can Make an Upgrade Unproductive
A fall is not the only problem worth considering. An upgrade might introduce a repeated leg separation, a short handstand, an awkward landing or hesitation before the next skill.
Several modest deductions can erase a small difficulty gain without any dramatic mistake. Conversely, improving familiar skills can raise the final score while leaving the D-Score unchanged.

Use Connections That Work Reliably
Linking suitable skills can earn extra points through Connection Value, or CV. However, the combination must match the relevant formula and meet the rules for continuity.
The practical question is whether the gymnast can perform the link well enough to keep its scoring benefit.
Suppose a valid connection adds 0.10 to difficulty but causes an additional 0.30 in execution deductions. Holding everything else constant, the combination lowers the final score by 0.20.
If the gymnast can perform the same link without those extra errors, it becomes a useful addition. The individual skills did not change; the quality of the combination did.
A Longer Series Is Not Automatically Better
A longer sequence may contain several valuable links, but it can also depend on precise timing throughout. A problem early in the series may prevent a later connection from happening as planned.
Coaches therefore need to examine each link. Smooth-looking combinations do not automatically earn bonus, and a fall or interruption does not necessarily erase every earlier connection in the routine.

Plan for a Missed Connection
A useful backup plan identifies what remains possible if the intended link breaks. The gymnast may still perform the individual skills, preserving their difficulty and any requirements they fulfill.
That does not restore the original Connection Value. Nor can a gymnast freely repeat skills to collect the same credit again. Any alternative has to respect repetition, counting and requirement rules.

Arrange the Routine for Rhythm, Stamina and a Strong Finish
Skill selection and skill order affect each other. A combination that works well by itself may become less reliable after several demanding elements.
The complete routine needs to show whether the gymnast can maintain technique through transitions, dance, swings and the final landing.
Give Each Movement a Purpose
Some movements earn difficulty. Others create a useful transition, fulfill a composition rule or help the routine flow.
In women’s Beam and Floor, artistry and composition are also evaluated within execution. Poor rhythm, limited movement and weak musical connection on Floor can cost points even when the major skills are completed. FIG WAG Code, Sections 12.5 and 13.5.
Choreography therefore deserves attention during routine construction. It should suit the gymnast’s movement style and connect the difficult elements into a coherent performance.
Remove Unhelpful Work Without Removing Necessary Content
A shorter routine may reduce opportunities for mistakes, but removing skills or choreography can also remove requirements, bonus or needed variety.
On women’s FIG Floor, for example, the dismount-bonus rules include conditions involving the number of acrobatic lines. Removing a tumbling pass may change more than the sum of the individual skill values. FIG WAG Code, Section 13.4.
The aim is an efficient routine that remains complete under its rules. “Fewer skills” and “better construction” are not interchangeable.
Evaluate the Ending in the Full Routine
A dismount or final tumbling pass must be assessed after the work that comes before it. Its difficulty advantage may disappear if the gymnast repeatedly reaches it with poorer technique or less control.
This is why an isolated successful dismount cannot settle the choice. Changing the ending, changing an earlier section or improving the routine’s overall execution may each produce a different result.
Test Alternatives Before Choosing the Competition Version
Comparing several complete performances can reveal more than comparing each routine’s best attempt.
The following invented practice scores illustrate the difference:

Routine B produces the highest single score, while Routine A produces the higher average and smaller spread in this example. Five evaluations do not predict a competition result, but the comparison shows why both scoring potential and consistency deserve attention.
The next step is to identify what causes the difference. Are the lower scores linked to one connection, uncertain skill credit, a difficult ending or errors throughout the routine?
An adjustment can then target that problem instead of automatically removing the hardest skill.
Match the Choice to the Competition Goal
A gymnast trying to produce a dependable contribution to a team may evaluate risk differently from an event specialist seeking a score high enough to contend for a medal.
That does not automatically make the hardest version appropriate for a final. The relevant question is whether its additional scoring potential is supported by the gymnast’s actual performances.
Routine choices can change as a skill becomes more consistent, as another option improves or as the competition’s needs change.
Apply the Same Comparison to Vault
Vault involves choosing a complete vault rather than arranging several elements. The same comparison between assigned value and likely deductions still applies.
For example, NCAA women’s Yurchenko full starts from 9.95, while the Yurchenko 1½ starts from 10.00. The additional half twist provides a starting advantage of just 0.05. NCAA 2026–27 Vault Chart, Appendix I.
In a hypothetical comparison, a full with 0.05 in deductions scores 9.90, while a 1½ with 0.15 in deductions scores 9.85. The higher-valued vault becomes the better scoring choice when its performance justifies the upgrade.

Who chooses a gymnast’s routine?

Do gymnasts simply perform their eight hardest skills?
